Portsmouth and Steve Cotterill on the verge of receiving http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Nugent-c10567’s breaking news
The Championship side Portsmouth, who were relegated in the 2009-10 season from English premier League, now fear the worst after it was revealed that their top goal scorer this season, David Nugent, might be on the verge of leaving the club come the end of the current 2010-11 season.
Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill has also shown his worries over the exit talks of the England international this summer but has highly praised the striker and his devotion to the club.
Nugent joined the club from Preston North End in 2007 where he spent two years and managed 94 appearances for the club in which he scored 33 goals.
The 25-year-old striker has only appeared once for the England National team in 2007 and also scored his first goal for England while playing against Andorra in a Euro 2008 qualifying match.
David Nugent spent a year’s loan stint with Burnley Football club (2009-2010) and managed to net six goals from 30 appearances, before he came back to Portsmouth in 2010.
Pompey’s boss Cotterill wants to retain the striker in the Portsmouth ranks but has conceded that it would be a relatively difficult job to stop Nugent from going elsewhere as the 25-year-old certainly deserves to play at the highest level.
"The better Nuge plays, the more press he gets and the more goals he scores. I don't know - does that take him away from Portsmouth? It would be a shame." Cotterill added.
The manager further hailed the performance of the England international by addressing the fact that Nugent has been one of the shining stars for Portsmouth this season and he tried his level best to lift the club back again into England’s top flight football League, but unfortunately it can’t happen this season.
Portsmouth are currently 12th in the Championship with forty-seven points and level on points with 11th placed Millwall while Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 are leading the flight with sixty-seven points.
Steve Cotterill expressed his disappointment after the striker refused to sign a new contract with the club for the upcoming 2011-12 season which hints towards the fact that Nugent might be leaving the club this summer.
"He's just not negotiating with us at this moment in time. I think there has been an offer made but there hasn't been anything coming back the other way. So he is obviously sitting and waiting until the end of the season.” Steve Cotterill added.
Portsmouth will host Sheffield United in their next Championship match on Saturday, the 5th of March, while Scunthorpe United will be the last challenge for the Pompey boys this season, and the match could also be David Nugent’s last fixture in the Portsmouth shirt.
Though, the manager and Nugent’s team-mates would be hoping against hope that the 25-year-old decides in to stay with the club.
