Steve Cotterill made one change to his starting line-up from a 2-0 win against Ipswich Town last weekend. Nwankwo Kanu replaced http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lee-c21860 Miller started upfront in a 4-5-1 formation for the visitors.
The game suffered a 15 minute delay due to traffic problems on the motorway. Moments later, Nugent produced a 25 yard effort which was quickly saved by Josh Lillis. The hosts completely dominated the possession and the midfield play in the opening half hour. The visitors came close to scoring in the 34th minute but Michael Collins right footed shot from inside the penalty area went centimetres away from the wide post. Nugent had several attempts to score in the first half but he was unlucky not to convert his chances into a goal.
The second half promised an exciting game. The visitors came close with a chance just after the resumption as Collins shot from Mark Duffy’s cross was beautifully saved by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jonathan-Hogg-c19027 made a last ditch block to turn Duffy’s effort wide for a corner. The hosts created several chances to score but their strikers were wasteful in front of the goal and could not capitalise. Pompy finally managed to double their lead in the 80th minute. Kanu and Mokoena played a lovely one-two before the latter unleashed a thunderous left footed strike which found the back of the net to make it 2-0 for the hosts. The hosts deserved the goal as they were clearly the better of the two sides. The visitors faded later in the game, as they crashed to their second consecutive defeat.
Portsmouth will play Sheffield United in their next encounter on 5th March, while Scunthorpe host Swansea City the same day.
