Sunderland and Stoke are both being linked with late deadline day moves for England goalkeeper David James, after it was revealed that Portsmouth would have to offer the 39-year-old a new contract should he play 10 more games for the south coast club. Cash-strapped Pompey are keen to offload the former Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham and Manchester City keeper before they are obliged to make the offer – a clause stipulated in James’ contract – and would prefer to offload the 49-times capped veteran.
