Portsmouth’s Liam Lawrence insists club can make the play-offs
Portsmouth midfielder Liam Lawrence has told the
Portsmouth Evening News that the south coast side can reach this year’s Championship play-offs, despite being 21st in the table after 10 games.
But Lawrence is still aiming high. “People will probably laugh, but I think we've got a good chance of the play-offs.” Lawrence has had an impressive start to life on the south coast,
hitting four goals in his seven appearances, in addition to excellent form displays. His form has coincided with an upturn in fortunes for Steve Cotterill’s side, who, after a winless first seven games, has claimed seven points in their last three outings.
Lawrence, along with Dave Kitson, signed on transfer deadline day from Stoke, which saw Marc Wilson go the other way. It’s been a deal that has ignited Pompey’s season, and Lawrence now
believes the Blues can worry any side in the division. “Things have definitely turned around and teams are going to start fearing us,” the Republic of Ireland international stated.

He went on to suggest that had it not been for two silly errors, Pompey would’ve taken all three points from pre-season promotion favourites Middlesbrough on Saturday. “Against Middlesbrough,
it was two mistakes that gave them two goals. But if we can cut them out, we can beat any team,” he insisted.
At this moment in time, Lawrence’s aims do seem a little ambitious. Having said that, Pompey’s team has enough quality to beat any side in the division, but they are lacking in numbers,
which suggests that any kind of injury list would ruin their chances. Lawrence will be desperate to get back to the Premier League as quickly as possible, as he clearly has the quality to perform at that level. He may have to be patient though, as its still
unlikely Pompey will get promotion at the first time of asking.
