Portugal gears itself up for 2011 FIVB World League
The Men’s National Volleyball Team of Portugal is giving the final touch to their preparation for fast approaching 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League.
Portugal is scheduled to play a friendly tournament with neighbour country Spain at the weekend. A total of three matches will be played between two teams. The first match is set to take place on Friday, May 20, while the rest of the two matches will be
held on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
All three matches will be hosted by Portugal. The Sports Pavilion Hall of Povoa de Varzim City has been selected as the venue for the clash. Friday’s match will start at 16:30. Likewise, the second match is set to start at 18:00. The last encounter will
be staged on the morning of Sunday, while the official time of fixture is 10:30.
Portugal and Spain have been included in the sixteen-team grid, which is supposed to appear at the podium of 2011 FIVB World League. The premier men’s competition, FIVB World League will start off on May 27 and the thrilling campaign will continue until
July 10. The preliminary stage of the tournament will complete its length in six weeks, whereas several countries will get the chance to host the matches. The most influential final round will be staged in Gdansk-Sopot, Poland from July 2-10.
Portugal is returning to the FIVB World League after five years. They last participated in 2006 FIVB World League, when they finished in the 16th slot. It was not a satisfactory performance by Portuguese. Nonetheless, the team has once again qualified for
the World League and has firm determination to go higher in world ranking.
Rui Santos, one of the Portugal’s top guns expressed his views and said, “We left the World League for reasons that are beyond us, but we deserve to be among the best in the World League and playing the best. It is a reward for our work and a dream come
true again. 2010 was a memorable year for the team because we won the European League. We are doing an excellent job and I think the group is even stronger this year. Our goal is to reach the Final Round of the World League.”
They are placed in Pool C along with teams from Serbia, Argentina and Finland. Portuguese squad will be required to demonstrate a convincing performance at the World League matches, in order to catch the limelight. Team has been preparing for the big competition
since long and the friendly tournament with Spain will further help them to hone their skills.
