Portugal make Paulo Bento their new manager
Portugal have made Paulo Bento their new manager after sacking Carlos Quirez earlier this month. Bento played 35 times for Portugal as a defensive midfielder . He has been given a contract until the end of the European Championship in 2012.
Bento who is aged 41 managed Sporting Lisbon from 2005 until 2009. During his tenure as Sporting manager he has won two Portuguese cups and had four back to back second place finishes. He also guided Sporting Lisbon into the last 16 knock out phase of the
Champions League. He came under severe pressure in November 2009 and quit the club having failed to win a league game over a two month period.
Numerous candidates had been linked with the Portuguese managerial position. Jose Mouriniho was one of the names linked with taking temporary charge of the team, but Mouriniho ruled himself out and has only been in the Real Madrid job since the summer. Portugal
are currently on only one point having drawn with Cyprus 4-4. In the following game they lost to Norway 1-0. The poor campaign and the fact that Quirez was given a ban for 6 months meant that the Portuguese Football Association were likely to replace Quirez.
The former Portuguese manager was found guilty of misconduct in relation to trying to obstruct anti-doping officials from testing Portuguese players. None of the players were found guilty.
Bento’s first match in charge will be against Denmark on the 8th of October. Portugal will then face Iceland on the 12 of October. Portugal will go in to the games knowing that they must improve and take six points from the two games.  This will
be a huge step up for Bento who will not have coached stars like Ronaldo and Nani. The new boss will have to adapt quickly to international football.
