The Seleccao were able to secure victory in their last match against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Iceland-c2921, but the 5-3 score line reflected on the defensive woes the team had.
Without their main leader of the backline, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ricardo-Carvalho-c30973, Portugal were unable to contain Iceland’s attack and although they netted five times, they made things quite difficult for themselves.
Goals from Luis http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nani-c27299 and Helder Postiga seemed to have put Paulo Bento’s men in the front seat before half-time, but the Strákarnir okkar came back stronger after the breather and found the back of the net twice to set-up a nail biting finale.
Portugal, however, had other plans and eventually put the game beyond reach of the visitors with strikes from Joao Moutinho and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Eliseu-c12315 Pereira late on.
While his side took another leap in their bid to qualify for next year’s European championships, Paulo Bento criticized his players for conceding three goals unnecessarily.
The tactician is now keen to address the issue on hand and revealed that in their next qualifier against Denmark, he will not accept anything other than a win.
"I never plan to draw or lose. We go there with the aim of a sixth [successive] victory in the group. Portugal will play with two possible results that would allow us to finish in first place, but the priority is to win,” he said.
Portuguese forward, Helder Postiga, also echoed the sentiments made by the trainer and said that the Danish were not a side easy to beat.
"Denmark are a great team with important players in big leagues across the world. They're a real candidate to qualify – but so are we and even more so. We'll have to be at our best,” the attacker said.
Portugal take on Denmark in their Euro 2012 qualifier on the 11th of October at Parken Stadion.
