Futebol De Club do Porto, which is more commonly known as Porto or Porto F.C is a Portuguese football club which currently is a participant in Portuguese League’s first division. Porto F.C is tsituated within the famous city of Porto in Portugal and is one of the most successful clubs in Portugal ever since football became prominent in the European country.
Porto was founded in 1893 and is one of the big three clubs in Portugal, the other two being Sporting Lisbon and Benfica. An internationally respected club, Porto has a national record of winning six international titles and winning the European and World Club champions in 1987 and 2004. It also was the first club in Portugal to bring home the UEFA Champions League trophy as well as the UEFA Super Cup trophy.
In 1987, Porto also became one of the few select club sides to have ever won three titles in one season. In Portugal, they were the first club side ever to achieve the treble feat. As far as domestic competition is concerned, Porto have won five Portuguese league titles in a row and have also won a total number of 24 league titles.
Porto also holds the record of winning the Portuguese Super Cup a total of 16 times. In total Porto have 58 national titles to their credit. The Portuguese giants play their home matches at Estadio do Dragao which replaced their previous home stadium Estadio das Antas. Porto has also extended its sporting activities to other recreational sports like Handball and Basketball. Recently a new multi-purpose arena was built by the club to accommodate the above mentioned extra sports that Porto excels in.
Porto’s football supporters and fans are called Portistas. Porto’s finding owner was a wine-salesman called Antonio Nicolau de Almeida. His first contact with football occurred during his trips to England. The club’s second owner was called Monteiro da Costa. Porto are also considered as huge commercial giants because of their several super markets around the city of Porto. Their stores are called Loja Azul which in English translated into the Blue store. They currently have a sponsorship deal with Nike.
F.C Porto have played a total of number of 2048 times in the Portuguese championship and have won 1333, drawn 375 and lost 340 of these games. They have scored 4542 goals and have conceded less than 2000 goals in their total number of 2048 games. Porto have a total number of 3342 points, this tally is accurate only till the end of 2007-2008 season. The Porto based club won their first trophy in 1911, the trophy’s name was Union of the North Cup. In 1934-1935 season, Porto won the Campeonato da Liga which was considered Portugal’s greatest national trophy.
Porto’s real success started coming after 1982, as they won 19 national league titles, 11 Portuguese cups and 16 Portuguese Super Cups in the following seasons. Porto also won one European Cup and one UEFA Champions league in the 1990s and 2000s. Portugal’s most successful managers to date have been Jose Mourinho and Pinto Da Costa.
