Portuguese defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ricardo-Carvalho-c30973 reveals why he left Chelsea, praises Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho
The 32-year-old Portugal and Real Madrid central defender Ricardo Carvalho explained his reasons for leaving English Premier League side Chelsea in 2010. Carvalho left Chelsea after six years to follow former coach Jose Mourinho to La Liga giants Real Madrid
in a much criticized move.
The Portugal international revealed he had realized he was in need for a new challenge, which is why he joined Madrid in the summer of 2010. He admitted he was eager to prove he was still able to play top class football after spending so much time with the
London club.
Carvalho said he wanted to leave his comfort zone and try out in another league before he finally retired. He said he understood the reaction of people, especially Chelsea supporters, who were disappointed with his unexpected departure.
Carvalho said while speaking to reporters, “I can understand why some people were critical when I signed. I’m 32 but I was sure I’d be successful here. It’s a different style of play, and I wanted to show that I was in the right physical and mental shape.”
The Portuguese defender continued, “It would have been easier for me to stay at Chelsea, where I’d already earned people’s respect. Leaving there meant starting again, but that’s just what I needed: a challenge. Real Madrid was just the challenge I was looking
for.”
Carvalho arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2004 from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Terry-c18895 in defense as Chelsea went
on to win the English Premier League.
The second season at Stamford Bridge was just as successful as the first, with Chelsea retaining the English Premier League crown. Carvalho went on to score a goal in the final league match against Manchester United to help his side to a 3-0 win and the
title.
In his time with the London club, Carvalho has made a total of 210 appearances in all competitions and has scored 11 goals. He has won 3 English Premier League and FA Cup titles and two Carling Cup and Community Shield titles as a Chelsea player.
The Portuguese admitted Mourinho was one of the main reasons why he decided to leave http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 to join Madrid. He said he held the Portuguese manager in the highest regard and hoped to win more trophies under him.
Carvalho praised his coach and fellow countryman, claiming he was the best coach in the world, he said, “Mourinho and I have won a lot of titles together, and I hope to win more with him here. He’s the best coach in the world, and he knows exactly what needs
to be done.”
