Positano or Sorrento, Italy?

Backpacking in italy with a friend, which has better beaches... things to do... more beautiful... better nightlife??

I choose to stay in Sorrento when I visited this area. I found that Sorrento was a great base to see Pompeii, Positano, Capri, Almalfi, etc, etc. The bus system worked well for us.

As far as nightlife, we didn't seem to find to much in either Poistano or Sorrento. It was the same as in larger cities such as Florence or Rome. But, it could have just been the time of season, who knows. It was slower paced and the streets quieted down rather early. We actually met friends one night at their hotel in  Positano and just had drinks at the bar in their hotel.  I also found Sorrento to be less expensive than Positano, especially for street markets and shops. We even found a very large supermarket in the center of Sorrento which was nice, because we were used to seeing tiny little markets in larger cities. The area in itself is beautiful(Almalfi Coastline).  You will enjoy driving that coastline. a little scary, but so memorable! Enjoy it all... Wherever you stay, you will make it wonderful.
