Position of Rexy Mainaky in the Badminton Association of Malaysia is yet to be decided
Rexy Mainaky’s position as Malaysia’s Doubles chief coach is yet to be decided by the Badminton Association of Malaysia. The coach has been working with the top Men’s Doubles shuttlers of the country, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong but their poor performance
at the 2011 World Championships has put the coach’s position in danger.
Rexy’s weak position in the coaching squad of Malaysia is the result of the bad run of Koo Kien and Tan Boon at the World Championships. The shuttlers were supposed to deliver better performances and reach at least in the semi-final of the tournament. They
lost to their arch-rivals, Yoo Yeon Seong and Ko Sung Hwan of Korea in the Men’s Doubles quarter-final stage.
In the five head-to-head meetings between these two pairs, the Malaysians always remained unlucky as they have lost all battles to the Koreans. The loss in the World Championships quarter-final match has also pushed them down to World Number Five position
in the Men’s Doubles world rankings, while the Koreans have grabbed Number Four spot.
Many think that Rexy, as a coach, has given everything to the shuttlers and there is nothing left in him which could produce better results. However, some say that his position as a chief coach should be reconsidered. There are also rumours that Koo Kien
and Tan Boon are not satisfied with Rexy and want someone else as their coach. However, both shuttlers have denied this speculation.
The doubles shuttler, Koo Kien, expressed his views about his training with Rexy by saying, “I have never stated that I wanted to part ways with Rexy. If there such a speculation, then it is not true.”
Tan Boon also said, “I have not made such a statement and it is not our job to decide who we want to train under. It is up to the management to decide on a coach for us.”
However, despite the entire speculations one thing is clear that Rexy will continue coaching the doubles shuttlers until next year’s Olympic Games but his position as a chief coach will be decided in the meeting of Coaching and Training Committee (CTC),
on September 8.
