Positives and negatives of isolation?

What are some positives and negatives of being isolated outside of your obvious obligations (i.e. work, school...you're sort of enmeshed with other people and can't really be too isolated)

What would you suggest; I am very withdrawn and isolated and even when I try to socially interact with people, I find it almost impossible. Ironically, I can interact with people if we have a commonality (like school or work)

I'm 24, in graduate school....and I just don't feel connected to anything remotely college related...

  2. I used to be that way when I was a teen for a while.  When I got away from home and joined the military I really liked it.  Prior to that, people that didn't know me well thought; I was either shy or stuck up.  But, what I later learned was that it had to do more with growing up without love and being supersensitive about disapproval of others. I grew up with a lot of criticism.  But, getting out of that environment, developing confidence and learning to like/love myself...I am learning to love myself.  I still have problems with some relationships but am trying to live in the moment and not the past or look for approval of others. I am sort of rambling..but my point...isolation is not good.  Many things we do "bad" for ourselves are comfortable habits even though they don't seem like it.  Relax and have fun...even if you have to work at it:)
