Pospisil, Nestor, Raonic and Wozniak look to hunt gold for Canada in Olympics 2012 – Tennis News
Vancouver born, Vasek Pospisil, doubles world number one, Daniel Nestor and the 21st ranked youngsters, Milos Raonic, will take charge of the Canadian tennis team in London Olympics. In the women’s category, the true
warrior, Aleksandra Wozniak, will join the Canadian team according to the press release by the Canadian Tennis Federation on Wednesday.
Canada has won gold medal once in the field of tennis and it was none other than the doubles specialist, Daniel Nestor, who teamed up with Sebastien Lareau, in 2000 to win the gold medal in Sydney Olympics, Australia.
Raonic who is playing the Gerry Weber Open and has reached the quarter-final stage of the tournament will play in the men’s singles category whilst Wozniak who belongs to Que will take responsibility of flying her country’s flag
high in women’s singles.
Nestor lifted the Roland Garros French Open title with his long lasting doubles partner, Max Mirnyi, beating the likes of the former world number one duo from America, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan. The twin Bryan brothers were stripped
of their number one rank in the doubles category earlier by Mirnyi and Nestor, who have been a devastating force in the doubles category.
Speaking about the chance of playing in yet another Olympics campaign, Nestor said, “I'm very proud to be in a position where I can represent my country and hopefully bring back another medal. It was quite a special feat winning
Olympic gold in Sydney in 2000 and with the growth of tennis in our country; we all can have a chance to make Canada proud." It will be his fifth consecutive appearance in the Olympics and that marks almost 16 years of professional tennis for the Canadian
veteran.
Wozniak who is just 24-year-old just made the cut-off of Top-56 players after her terrific performance in the French Open at Paris. He defeated the likes of the 31st seed Chinese superstar, Jie Zheng, and ended up with
the most toughest draw; losing the former world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the third round. However, she did well enough to grab the 56th spot in the world rankings and earn a direct entry into the London Olympics, starting in the last week
of July.
It is a very decent squad for the Canadians who have struggled to make a name for their country at the elite platform. However, the likes of Raonic, Nestor and Wozniak have the ability to stun the world with some world class performances.
