Question:

Possible Dry Socket?

I got all four of my wisdom teeth extracted exactly one month ago and I occasionally smoke. Just a couple of days ago I started to get severe pain in my jaw bone that shot up to my ear and behind my eyes. This is probably the worst pain I've been in since the extraction. I waited about 2 weeks after the extraction to smoke by the way and I do not smoke all of the time. Dry socket???

  1. IF A DRY SOCKET WOULD FORM IT'S WITHIN 24-48 HOURS IMMEDIATELY POST EXTRACTION. SMOKING WITHIN THIS PERIOD IS NOT ADVISED BECAUSE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF LOOSING THE HEALING BLOOD CLOT AND CAUSING THE DRY SOCKET. WHAT YOU HAVE IS NOT DRY SOCKET BUT THIS SHOULD BE EXAMINED BY THE DENTIST.

  2. I wouldn't think that dry socket would show up a month after, but if you have continuous pain, go back to the DDS that did your extractions.  They shouldn't charge you, and should be able to squeeze you in same-day if you call when they open.
