Question:

Possible Issues with Breastfeeding

I am expecting twins in February and would really like to breastfeed my babies. I have a 17-month old that I chose not to breastfeed. I was wrapped really early and I never got engorged so I am thinking that I never got any milk. Is that because I was wrapped so early or if there may be an issue. Also, if it is possible for me to breastfeed, I am going to pump exclusively. Has anyone ever pumped exclusively? Any pointers/tips and suggestions for a breast pump. Thanks!

  1. I pumped exclusively for the first two months because my daughter wouldn't take the breast. But at two months she magically decided that she liked the breast better. Anyway, at first I think they ask you to pump at least 6 to 8 times a day (for the first 4 to 6 weeks) so that your milk supply comes in nicely. Especially since you're having twins, this would be good so that you have enough for both of your babies. Freeze any extra that you get so that you can use it later.

I used the Medela Pump-in-style-Advanced. If you can get a hospital grade pump, that would be best for exclusive pumping.

Also, you can go to the following site to converse with and get advice from other moms who also pump exclusively. http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-ppe...

    Enjoy those two little babies!

  2. This may be extremely unhelpful...

But I just wanted to say that exclusive pumping (especially for twins) is extremely difficult! You have all the head ache of both bottle and breast feeding and none of the convenience of either. You still have to wash, sterilize, fill and hold the bottles...while worrying about pumping, supply issues etc.

It may be easier just to work with a lactation consultant and learn how to latch and position babies. They can even show you how to breast feed them both at the same time. Talk to them as well about your breast feeding hang ups because I think that is what it comes down to. They may be able to make you feel more comfortable about what should be a natural process.

  3. I have pumped exclusively since my baby was born. Morning, eveing and midnight. I got 12oz each time.  In the beggining you might just get 2 oz or so but keep on pumping and drink lots of fluids. Stay away from any kind of alcohol. good luck!

  4. sorry what do you mean by ''wrapped''? your going to have to spend ALOT of time pumping for twins!! i would just nurse them at least for 4 weeks make sure your supply is good for them and they are putting on weight then you can maybe start expressing for a few feeds a day. congrats on the twins!!x

oh to recommend a good pump medela have a good reputation.
