I'm going to be a Senior in high school next year and I want ideas in what job i could get.

Ever since i was like 10, i would always tell people i wanted to be a zoologist because thats when i learned the meaning of "zoologist." haha

But yeah, i've always loved animals and wanted to work with them.

i wouldn't really like to work at a zoo, i don't like that they are in little cages, i wouldn't want to support that.

Thanks for any suggestions!! :)

  1. The only place where you are going to feed and bond with animals might be a zoo.  Not sure why you think zoos are bad places...sounds like you really don't understand what purpose zoos have.  They are mainly for EDUCATING the public about endangered species....many also have endangered species programs that help save wildlife in the wild.  If not for zoos, the California Condor would be extinct right now.  Zoos saved them from the brink of extinction.   Zoos offer people the chance to see exotic animals that they would otherwise NEVER see in their lifetime (unless they were world travelers), up close and personal.  People tend to care more about animals if seen live rather than in a book or on TV.  Seeing them at a zoo may provoke some sort of bond with the animal and may make them care and respect this animal more and want to save it in the wild.  So, don't be so down on zoos...they serve a great purpose, and if you are a true animal lover you would educate yourself about the important work they do.  You might also think about becoming a wildlife biologist and study animals in their natural habitat rather than in captivity.  However, you will not get to "bond" with them, as you will try and have as little actual physical contact with them  as possible unless you are studying some small, non-dangerous animals.  You can also work as something like a game warden, park ranger,  or naturalist.

  2. Wildlife biologist, or a teacher of biology/zoology.

  4. You could look into animal behavior either research or practical (training).  There is a lot being done right now using behavior to improve welfare of production animals.

Also, think about research in zoology.  Check out some university zoology departments and take a look at what the professors are researching.  There are really fascinating projects going on out there!

I love zoology, there are so many different areas!  If you're looking for a really interesting book, read Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin.  She's an animal behaior researcher and animal welfare advocate with autism.  She draws really interesting connections between the way people with autism and animal view the world.

I could go on all night!  I got my undergraduate degree in zoology, feel free to email me if you want to know more about the field!  :)
