Possible meteorite hitting Earth recently?

Question

Hi, I'm doing a science project and I am investigating meteorites. Does anyone know what date scientists discovered that a large meteoroid was a approaching Earth and caused a scare, however it did not reach the Earth's atmosphere but came relatively close? This happened a few years back, but if anyone knows, it would be great. If you can give me the answer, please state your name because part of my criteria is to give a bibliography, however, you are not obliged to do so if you do not wish.

Hummm... yes, I remember it well.. seems like it was named "Kehotik" or something like that.  You could see it at night in the Northern sky with the naked eye... it was about 1996 or 1997.  It was especially memorable because there was a cult in california that all the members killed theirselves so their souls could go to the comet.  It was quite a scandal at the time.

BLa bla bla its always the same storie. They dont know and if they know they wont tell because that will make every body scared. There are a lot of things that could happen. I always was affraid off these things but when it happens it happens and there is nothing you can do aboiut
