Question:

Possible pregnant pup! HELP!!?

Ok, I've asked this question earlier, but long story short, I've adopted a puppy. She's a mix, about 9 months old, and I think she's pregnant. When I adopted her, I was told that a male dog (beagle) had "gotten a hold" of her. So since I've had her, I have been looking for signs, and I think that she is. So now my question is, do I allow her to give birth naturally, or take her to my vet to have a C-Section. I'm concerned about her giving birth at such a young age and she's so tiny (vet thinks she's a Daschund Chihuahua mix) I'm furious that her previous owners allowed this to even happen, and never got her spayed, which is the first thing on my list after this whole fiasco is over with. But in the mean time, I need advice!

FYI: I'm a responsible pet owner, with 1 other dog (male-nuetered) and I'm totally against puppy mill and "designer" bred dogs!!!

  1. If you even think she's pregnant, she needs pre-natal care.  You can ask the vet's opinion then, but I agree that she should be spayed right now and the litter aborted.  It would be much, much safer for her at her age than going through with the pregnancy at her age.

  2. Bring her to the vet and see if he can tell you how far along she is. If she's within a certain range the vet can do an emergency spay/abort, which would be the best option for her right now. Beyond that she needs to go in to check for number of pups AND size of pups.

Since you didn't plan to whelp i would see if the vat can take her that whole week she is due. Some vets will do this (one near my home does) and will keep an eye on her, that way she can give birth naturally and they'll be on call if c-section is needed.

  3. I would be tempted to see the vet now and see if she can be spayed, this will abort the pups.

She is far too young to be having puppies.
