Possible reasons why a 10 yr old doesn't talk?

I have a ten year old boy that is very shy and doesn't talk to anyone. According to his teacher at school, he doesn't talk there either and has ZERO friends?

He's very good at school though. But his social or emotional skills are nonexistant. He doesn't even make eye contact with grown-ups??

could be autism...it could be nothing...call his doc and have him looked at just to be safe

You need to get him checked out by a pediatrician. Is he autistic? He could be. Just because a child is autistic, doesn't mean he isn't smart. Have some tests run and you will feel better knowing why he is shy and doesn't make eye contact. To me the eye contact is a tell tale sign of autism.

In your last question you said that he has a speech impediment and his father makes him uneasy about it. That would do it, he feels uncomfortable that people at school would do the same thing. I STRONGLY recommend counseling.

You might want to look into a condition called "selective mutism." I don't know your child, but I know a boy with this and it matches the description of your son. Best of luck!

does he talk to you????? Or could he possible have a form of autism??? The No eye contact made me think of autism plus they are super smart in a lot of cases

He probably is shy or needs some confidence.

You should sign him up for a course that he is very good in.

My brother was not talkative at all. But my parents enrolled him in basketball, which he's very good at, and voila!

Have you talked to your doctor about this? He is either really shy or he could be autistic. Autistic children are actually very intelligent but not very social.

Do not buy into this talk about your child having autism.  He would not from your description.  Trust me.  Take him to a good karate school and start him with lessons.  It really molds kids and brings them out.
