Question:

Possible thesis for Compare/ Contrast essay?

Heathcliff and Barnes accept the conflict of not being able to be with the one they love differently and their actions reflect the stereotypes placed upon them at the time, revealing the authors’ intention of using the character’s transcending conflict to stress the importance of the ongoing social affairs of the audience’s time period.

The prompt was to compare two books: Wuthering Heights and The Sun Also Rises based on anything. I chose conflict and came up with the thesis above. However, I'm also supposed to fit all of THAT into a four paragraph essay. I'm doing my comparisons/contrasts point by point.

Can anyone give me a rough outline of what I should write?

  1. I would suggest changing your point by point plan to c/c by characters in order to meet the 4 paragraph requirement:

    I.   Introduction and thesis statement

    II   Heathcliff's conflicts

    III  Barnes's conflicts

    IV Conclusion

Btw, I think your sentences need to be shortened to be more clear.  Also, the word "differently" seems to modify the wrong word (love) and needs to be moved to modify "accept"

    For example, would you consider:

Both Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights and Barnes from The

Sun Also Rises accept the conflict of not being able to be with the one they love.  Their different actions reflect the stereotypes placed upon them at the time. For example, (1, 2, 3). Each character's conflict stresses the importance of the ongoing social affairs of the time.

  2. I don't think your thesis is clear enough - frankly, it just sounds like a list of facts. Your thesis should clearly show what it is you're planning to argue - here you're just state a fact: Heathcliff and Barnes accept the conflict of not being able to be with the one they love differently... ok that's a fact. But why is that a significant fact? That's what your thesis should state clearly.
