Possible to get credit card, w/ no job?

Hello!!

I was just wondering if it is possible for me to get a credit card with no job?

My fiance has a good job, and he makes decent money considering we dont have tons of bills to pay. Howeve I dont work only he does. He told me when we got engaged that he would rather me not work, unless it was really really something I wanted to do. So we decided on him working and me going to school full time. ((I know I can get a student credit card, but I dont start school again untill august))

So is there a way I can get a credit card to build up my credit, even though I dont have a job?

Thank you!!!

  1. Hey!  I had this problem when I first arrived in the USA. My credit rating back in Europe was fabulous, but the banks are not indexed internationally so I couldn't get a credit card. Period.

Instead, I applied for an American Express card. It's not a credit card, because you have to pay it all off in full each month, so they're not looking for your credit rating when you apply. I was a student and not working, so I had no income to speak of either.

Whaddya know, within a year I was getting applications in the mail from major credit companies who saw my perfect payment record (not that I had any alternative!) and wanted my business. That way you can build up your credit rating slowly but surely. Good luck!

  2. In order for a credit card company to extend you credit, they need to know that they are going to be paid back. No job usually means no credit.

Since you are not married, you cannot get credit in your name on your boy-friends income.

Keep in mind that using false information while applying for credit is a criminal offense.

  3. GET A SECURED CREDIT CARD

Ask your local bank if it offers secured cards. Many national banks are starting to offer this service. Your past credit is less important when applying for a secured card, as you will be depositing funds into the bank to secure the credit line on the card.

You can get this card even if you still have bad credit on your credit file. By putting $500 into a savings account, you will be allowed to charge up to $500 on the card. Some banks may give you a credit line that is two to three times the amount of your secured deposit.

Make sure that any credit card you get is not listed as a secured card to the credit bureaus, and that it also lists your credit limit. If your card does not have these characteristics, you could actually be damaging your credit by getting one.
