Possible to import a Mercedes B class from Germany to US?

I've been looking into purchasing/leasing a new vehicle. I know of a former colleague who somehow leased a Mercedes which he picked up in Germany and had shipped to the US. Does anyone know how this is possible?

  1. Not possible any more for anything that doesn't come in a U.S. federalized version.  Congress outlawed it in 1988.

  2. It would be a gray market car, not up to emmission standards in the US. Could cost you thousands to have it modified for inspection and to get a US title. Stay away from it. It could even be a scam where you have to wire money overseas. When you can afford one here, buy it here. You may not even get a warranty with an overseas car. Too many bad things can happen. Pass on it.

  3. they do have programs that allow you to buy a US spec MB and drive it overseas and have it shipped home but

you cannot easily buy a foreign spec. car and ship it home without having it modified at a cost that makes it not worth the effort.
