i was recently thinking about moving to a texas border town and i was thinking of piedras negras, the problem is is that there are not alot of jobs there. I recently read that there are alot of factories in reynosa and that they even employ americans. Is this true? How easy/hard would it be for me to get a job there? Or what if i wanted to live in reynosa and work in mcallen? Is that possible?

  1. If you are a US citizen you should have no trouble living in Reynosa and coming across to work in the USA. The biggest hassle might be having to cross the border every morning that you go to work. First would be the long lines, especially with the tighter security since 911, second would be border fees.  I am not sure what the border fees are right now, but that is something else you have to factor into your equation. I would venture to guess that it would cost you around $5 to go and come each day driving and $1 or so walking across. Maquiladora work in Mexico is not going to be for you, the pay there is good on the Mexican scale, but not worth it on the US payscale. I had a friend that did work on the Mexican side a few years back, but he started on the US side on one of the typical Maquiladora setups. That is where they ship components from the US side to be assembled in Mexico and then have them shipped back for distribution from the US warehouses. Well, he started in a US warehouse and eventually climbed the ladder to be a distribution manager out of the Mexico office but on a US payscale. Exploring something like that may be an option for you. Then you would be able to live in Mexico and get paid on an expat scale.
