Question:

Possible transmission problem (automatic)...?

I own a '01 Honda Civic that was purchased used in '03. Well about 2 years ago in early '06 i started to notice a slight hesitation or maybe skip shifting, i really don't know what to call it because i don't know much about cars. It occurs upon rolling stops at a stop light, like without coming to a complete stop. When you go to press the gas pedal it causes a split second hesitation like it realizes it's still in a higher gear and downshifts, then goes. It also does it on right handed turns onto side streets. I'll brake as i'm coming into the turn and then as i pull out of the turn and hit the gas pedal again it will hesitate in the same fashion in terms of realizing it's still in a higher gear and drops to a lower causing a quick drop or hesitation in acceleration for a split second before continuing on.

At this point it's more aggravating than anything else because otherwise everything runs fine. But i'm now beginning to think that this is a sign to a possibly much larger problem that might end up costing me a lot in the end to repair the longer it goes unchecked. I had already planned on taking it to have it looked at but i need something solid to tell them so maybe they can isolate the problem a lot faster than had i not told them anything.

Anyone's help on what it could be would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

  1. What might seem like a serious problem could have as simple a solution as low transmission fluid. That can cause the transmission to "slip," which is what it sounds like yours is doing.

I'd check that first. If it is low and that solves your problem, I'd change the fluid and filter and make sure that you don't have a transmission fluid leak as well.

  2. sounds like it need a good fluid and filter change.
