The reason some people still refuse is because a seatbelt can just as easily get you killed.  I had a friend that was in a really bad accident and would have died had she not been thrown from the vehicle.

It's uncool to wear a seat belt and as most people mentioned, teens think they're immortal and only old people die (old as in over 30).

Unfortunately, when you're ejected from a car in an accident, your chances of survival are pretty slim. and you become a projectile that can injure other people.

An unbelted passenger in the back seat that comes flying up through the front can snap the neck of a front seat passenger - at that point, your head may not be in position to be protected by the seat back. Fun, huh?

Everyone "knows" someone who didn't wear the seat belt and lived because of that.  Just like everyone "knows" it's against the law to drive barefoot, and that a dead rat was found in a KFC bucket.

Bottom line, seat belts save lives.  Documented.  Everything else is Urban Legend.

I've pulled too many dead people from cars that weren't wearing seat belts, so don't even try to convince me I'm wrong.
