Starting college, possibly wanting to go Pre-Medicine. What type of degree is needed to start off on the right foot? I believe I was told a Physics degree, but also was wondering about a degree in Biology or Chemistry? Would any of these help? Thanks for any advice given.

  1. all three are good, but i would recommend biochemistry, caused you get all 3, especially bio and chem

  2. For your BS, you will need a biology degree with an empahsis in anatomy and physiology.

  3. As a student that has finished Basic sciences and am preparing for Step 1, I would suggest the Biochem degree.  I was an engineering student.  I am so week in Biochem and it is one of the highest yield subjects there is.  I had a weak Biochem instructor in med school so I was not able to catch up to my peers that had it in undergrad.  I have had to teach myself biochem and it is time consuming and I still feel weak in it.

  4. i'm also pre-med, and going into college i thought i would need some sort of science related major/degree also, but you truly don't. i've been to enough summer programs and met enough admissions officers at med schools to really know what i'm talking about when i tell you this by the way. they really don't look at your major at all, it's all about the grades you get in your pre-med required classes (general chemistry, biology, organic chemistry, physics, optional biochem, optional genetics, optional physiology). so if your major is biology or chemistry, you need to think about if you're really interested in those subjects enough to take 400 level courses in it and know the subject inside and out when really all you need to get into med school is the basic courses. it always looks better to get an A or B in general chemistry when your major is art, than a C or D in higher level chemistry when your major is chemistry.

so what it all boils down to is: major in what you're truly interested in because the grades and numbers will all fall into place if you're doing something you enjoy.

hope that helped and good luck in your first year!

  5. you want to do Biology-Premed

  6. I am pre-med.

Mostly biology and chemistry.  But you dont' have to be a science major.  You can be a business, engineering, and other majors.  The only requirements is that you take the required courses prior to going to med school.

A few years ago, my professor told me that there are more biology majors in the application pool but the admissions pool are more chemistry majors.

    Major in anything you want.
