Post-fight riots in Argentina condemned by WBC – Boxing news
The WBC has strongly condemned the post-fight riots that shaped up in Mar del Plata, Argentina, following Johnriel Casimero’s victory over former champion Luis Lazarte on February 10, 2012.
Johnriel won the IBF light flyweight interim title by TKO in the 10th round.
President of WBC Don Jose Sulaiman called the post-bout riots ‘a shameful brawl’ in a press statement by WBC. The statement said that they, “Condemns this cowardly attack that many fans made against the foreign fighter (Casimero) and his team, they were
only 4 unprotected people who received brutal and unacceptable attacks from scores of people.”
The president further added, “The WBC rejects what happened and demands immediate action by the local authorities to punish those criminals that have stained boxing and the reputation of such an exemplary and honourable country like Argentina.”
He further said that this situation needs immediate action and that the WBC is not targeting just one country since such incidents have taken place previously as well in other countries such as in New York at Madison Square Garden after the bout between
Riddick Bowe and Andrew Golota.
The statement further said that all those people who attacked the defenceless boxer and his team should be ashamed of their actions and so should be the people in charge of security since it was their responsibility to avoid any such incidents from happening.
To conclude, the statement iterated that this event should be taken as an example by all boxing federation around the world, boxing commissions and promoters and security checks should be kept in mind before arranging for any sporting event.
The statement also pledged all boxing federation and promoters not to target Argentina as one country that can have such incidents or not to blame the country for the shameful happening since Argentina has always been home to great boxing matches with some
of the world’s best boxing venues.
The statement was released today by the WBC after considering the eventualities and circumstances of what happened on February 10. With this statement, WBC has made it clear that boxing is a sport that should be taken as seriously as other sports especially
by the law enforcement agencies of every country.
