A letter was originally posted to me a few weeks ago but was returned to sender as it had to be sent airmail and had went through a franking machine which didnt show airmail. The letter was then re posted to me from glasgow on 11th Aug 08. Today is 21st Aug. I still have not received this letter which is very important. It was posted 1st class to co clare in rep of Ireland. Should i be worried by now? How long does this normally take? Does 1st class cover airmail??

  1. It's absurd that the EU "is all one country" when they want to dump immigrants on us. But there are all sorts of controls for the rest of us. Ireland and Scotland are, in theory, both part of one state called the EU.

  2. I was told that all EU countries have the same postal rates, ie it costs the same to post a letter from London to Birmingham as from London to France, I have never been told that you have to send letters to another EU country by Air Mail, this seems odd to me . . . I know I've posted letter from Wales to Germany with just a first class stamp and they got there ok . . .

  3. Yes, I would contact Royal Mail immediately. I'm Irish and live in Edinburgh and regularly post cards and parcels and it only ever take 3/4 days max.

  4. I live in Eire and most of my family live in England so we use the post on a regular basis. The problem is not in the Irish side it is Royal Mail. My mother at one time assumed that a first class stamp would be sufficient but this is not the case by a few pence. Every now and then some ******** in Royal mail sticks a sticker on the letter stating "There was insufficient postage on this letter and it was therefore sent by alternative means" I have had post from England with this kindly message arrive 6 weeks or more after it was posted. I am not sure what the alternative means is but i suspect it involves donkeys retired from Blackpool or French racing snails. Be gratefull if it turns up at all as i am still waiting for a letter from my son posted in mid July with a first class stamp.

  5. Are you aware that Ireland is not part of the UK, so postage from Scotland to Ireland counts as an International letter, not a domestic one?  As such, there is no 'first class', it counts as a letter to the EC, which costs more.

If you didn't put the right postage on it, then there is a good chance it will go astray - download an enquiry form from the royal mail website.
