Question:

Postal service help?

Well uhh... I need to send some documents to a friend in the netherlands, and I've frankly never even used the postal service in my life, and I was wondering how that would work. The letter will be about 1 ounce, and I live in the US. Could I just guess that I get enough stamps on the letter to reach the rates between the US-Netherlands? And if I'm correct, I believe that rate is 90 cents? Just clarifying so I don't s***w up. Thanks

  1. Take the envelope with the address on it down to you local post office and they will weigh it and tell you how much to pay.  It isn't difficult and you won't look stupid.  Just tell them,

"I want to mail this to The Netherlands." and they'll help you.  If the documents are important it might be worth sending them registered post, just tell the clerk.

  2. www.usps.com

They have a calculator on the site.

Why don't you go to the post office. Hand them the envelope and they will tell you exactly how much.

  3. The wisest decision would be to go to the post office, take the letter, and get them to weigh it and put the correct postage on it.  If you guess and you are wrong, the letter could bounce back to you, but the stamps will be canceled anyway, and you will have to pay twice.  An alternative, if you have enough stamps lying around and you have access to a postal scale or food scale is to weigh the letter to be sure, then go to the postal service website and get the exact postage there (I think it's USpostalservice.com, but if it's not, it shouldn't be hard to find.)  The easiest way in the long run is to take the letter to the post office.  Sometimes, "the long way is the short way."
