Hi - so I'm just coming to the end of an undergraduate degree in Music at Oxford university, and am looking to apply to American universities to do a PHD for 2009/10.

Only thing is, being from England I have no idea where is good for music, and also which colleges give full scholarships for tuition fees and living (my friend just got one for cornell, so I know they do them). It would be amazing to get your help with any suggestions or advice. Thanks!

  1. SORRY I DONT KNOW

  2. Indiana University - Bloomington (this is a state school, but with a competitive program)

    Oberlin

    Eastman

    Northwestern University

    Boston Conservatory

    New England Conservatory of Music

    Julliard

Those are all top-notch conservatory-like schools.... VERY competitive, and hard to get $$$ at, I would imagine. You can also look at state schools, which are public and significantly cheaper. I am from the Midwest, so all I know is that U. of Illinois, U. of Michigan, U. of Iowa, and U. of Ohio have strong programs.

American schools frequently offer fellowships and assistantships to graduate students. Fellowships are hard to get.... they just waive your tuition and fees and give you a stipend just for being awesome. With an assistantship, you get the same deal, but you have to teach, or work in the music office or something. Most schools will give out tuition deals to many of their grad students..... you will have to audition/interview at a ton of US schools, and wait the long wait until they start offering you money.

Honestly, when choosing a grad school, I think the most important thing is the teacher you'll be studying with. What is your instrument? You want to look for a studio that has turned out successful students.

  3. I can recommend the Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester).
