Postmarking Mail?

If I physically bring a letter up to the counter at the post office, is it postmarked with today's date?

Yep, even if you drop it in a dropbox before the scheduled pickup time or give it to a carrier, it will get todays postmark. That is unless there is a problem with the item going through the machine, then they (we) put a cancelation mark which is just black lines..

If it's important like a last min. bill or taxes it's best to go in though.
