Question:

Postpartum bleed...?

I bled for almost three weeks after having my baby then it stopped. Because my midwife said we could resume having s*x once I was healed, my husband and I had s*x. After having s*x I began to bleed again fairly hard which lasted five to six days then stopped. I am now six weeks postpartum and I am no longer continuously bleed, but I keep having blood stain my panty liner and occasionally when I wipe. Is this normal and to be expected? If so, about how long should I expect this to go on for?

  1. I am assuming this is your first child. Congrats! Yes, it is normal. Your body is still adjusting to not having a baby inside, and hormonal changes seems to never stop. You will level off, though. Your OB could possibly give you a low dose birth control pill that helps regulate hormones for those of us that have odd bleeding issues like this. I bled for 9 weeks after my first child. It wasn't so bad after my second, but I bled non-stop after my third. I also had a tubal done, and blame that for my excessive bleeding. Now, over a year later, I am still not levelled off. I do not recommend tubals now. Anyway, just keep a pad or pantiliner on to protect yourself from the discharge (it will remain indefinately), and be patient. You should level off ok after a while. Meanwhile, talk to your OB about it. I am sure she could help you better. Consider the low dose thing, and study up on it, if you want to learn more about it.

    Congrats again!!!

  2. First of all I need to say that your baby is absolutely adorable!!!!  You must be a very proud mama:)

It is normal to still be bleeding a little bit.  It's very annoying isn't it!  I really think that it is different for everyone, but I think I had usually stopped by my 6 week Dr. visit, or it had really slowed down.  However, I still wore a pantyliner for quite a while (just in case).

I wouldn't worry about it.  Especially if it is just a little bit here and there.  Just ask your doctor about it the next time you go in to see him/her.  Or you could always bring it up to your baby's doctor if you see him/her before you need to go to yours.

Good luck to you and enjoy every minute you spend with your beautiful baby:)  God bless!
