Postponed twice for jury duty in NY. Says must serve. What if I don't?

I keep having to serve as a telephone stand by. The jury summons says to call after 4:30 on Fridays. Then when I call it says I have to be in court Monday morning. I can't tell my work the last second Monday morning. What will happen if I don't show for that must serve....if I bring a letter from work?

you have to show up.  you can get a contempt of court charge I believe.

your work has to allow you to show up too.  You can try to get out of it saying your work needs you, but you have to show up that first day.

Then the judge will decide if it was a legitimate reason for being late or absent or if you were being contemptious of the court summons.

You have to at least show up. You can thank our mayor for that. It doesn't mean you'll be pulled for an actual jury, but you need to bring a letter to the courthouse in person. Sorry that I don't have a better answer for you.

uhh, its illegal for work to stop you from going to jury duty. If you dont show up you can go ot jail

Years ago met this Dude, friend of a friend, who was relating His story to myself, and others within earshot.  Subject ?  being called for Jury Duty. His 1st  Interview? he learned a method,  I will just call it The Shock Effect.  When asked preliminary Q's (Note* I Would NEVER EVER Consider This Myself !!)  he started ( with out taking time for extra breaths), somethin like:  I hate Kids,  Waps, Negroids, spicks, camel Jockys, chinx, jewz, dogs, cats, Unions, Religions, Traffic Lights, Womens are Evil,  g**s/Lesbos should be Drowned, etc. You get the point  eh..  The interviewer Ran his azz outa that  Room Sooo Fast with the ole , dont call us, we will call you..  anyway,  have u considered Relocating OUT of The County?  or is it a State Thing?    I should have opened this Gem with..  I Think they are hosing you, with that Short Notice BS.. That is Totally RUDE.  In my county, being a Prop. Owner/landlord, the Small Claims Court, is Nothing but a Travesty, a Not very funny JOKE, another  Co. Dept. similar to Bldg. Dept, simply a ploy/money extortion...   In '04  I was Victim of ID Theft. (hired 3/03 a Lady 4 In-Home Office help Fired 7/03) My Check Writer Emp(different Gal). informed me of Bounced cks around 3/1/04 immed charged into My Citibank branch 2ask these coded #'s on MY stmt Loc. of Origin/Destination/routing#'s. 2bk oficials @then Mgr. sez"SAME words "Were Not Authorized to Give U that Info . My VERY Rarely used, but easily accessible Italiano Voice/MaxVolumne went on Auto. Me: WTF are U People Talkin about!! This MY Stmt, w/MY Name/MYssn,! MYacct# and U F'n IDIOTS, That is MY F-in MONEY!!  I go 2 say/YELL "I Demand EVERY Dime from My accts. IMMEDIATELY!!! No Idea how many Customers behind me,prob 8 &9 BkEmpls DIDNT CARE. Surely Cops were in Lot outsd bnk doors,REALLy wanted 2(Never liked Him) SMACK hisPunkSmirk..(Still with Me?)  Here comes the Jury/Court Part.. in My Case there WAS NONE.!!  PD Fraud Detective, 35ish Cute Gal Recognized My TRUTHS/EVIDENCE, enuf to send Case File to DA's  couple mts. go by, my calls not retrnd, find out File was LOST in Transit tween PD-DA( a Good 1/4mile) DA Rejects Case (NO one informs Me) 2 more mths. find Out CaseFile LOST btwm DA-back to PD. again Auto/Rage kicks in, due 2 agencys involved here, the Vol. controls reigned Back, to "Smart Aleck" Levels. I Call BOTH da/pd and suggest that I Fund the $$ to Make PhotoCopies so EACH Dept. would have Their VERY Own 20page File. thus lessening the chances of Mis handling-Further Delays etc.  I could Feel The  SHOCKED-Expressions from their End of the Ph. Line!!  They didnt take to Kindly of My Offer. days/wks pass, my ph calls unreturned,  So My (in Reserve)  Italian Intelligent Gent Mode is Now pressed into service. I Hand Carry NEWLY Photo FileCopy to DA, hoping to shake hands, and he can look Me in the EYE, his Pol. Sci training should see My TRUTH and determination, and My "Subtle" Reminders that His SWORN Oath/DUTY is To SERVE The PUBLIC. and that MY Tax $$ are helping to pay for his Green Fees!! oops asst. DA on 3wk. Vacation. So Idiot me asks clerk who is handling his work load??  another Shocked Glazed Stare of Total Confusion. I'm popping ques. these people have been trained for/Dealt with. They may put out a warrant on you for failure to appear.  You are required to go.

You mistake was letting them know you received the notice in the first place, anything that comes in the mail and you don't have to sign for it, NEVER GOT THERE, but now they know you got it so you better follow though on it

The possibility is that the judge could order a sheriff's deputy to go to your workplace, place you under arrest, and deliver you to the judge's court THEN.  Like, when you don't show up, that day, that morning, THEN.  Are you prepared for that?  This isn't school....notes from work don't excuse you.

You got it backwards. You don't go to work and give an excuse letter to the court. Instead you go to court and give the excuse letter to your employer.

The reason is  because it's against the law to punish an employee when they have to serve on a jury.
