Postseason hero, New York Yankees’ Andy Pettitte to retire – MLB News
It looks like New York Yankees’ Andy Pettitte has decided to finally call it quits from baseball as he is to announce his retirement on Friday at a news conference at Yankee Stadium.
After a dismal 2010 season by the Yankees, Pettitte has decided to retire from baseball. Pettitte had recently informed the Yankees’ owner Hal Steinbrenner on his decision to retire from the team.
Pettitte is a tremendous pitcher who will surely be missed by the Yankees as a starter. Especially since the team was unable to sign Cliff Lee, they are now left with CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Phil Hughes. This can be dicey situation for the Yankees,
as they are all tremendous pitchers, however if any of these players suffers an injury, the team could be in real trouble to find an effective starting pitcher.
Brian Cashman, the General Manager is considering his pronouncement the final departure signal. "Andy's not in play," the GM said frequently this winter. "Unless he tells me otherwise, I'm proceeding as if he won't be with us next year."
Pettitte started his career with the Yankees in 1995; he has had a tremendous career with numbers like a 240-138 win loss record, an ERA of 3.88 and 2,251 strike-outs. He has been a part of the Yankees for five World Series wins. Andy is the first player
in MLB history to have 19 post-season playoffs.
It seems like the 2010 season has a lot to do with the Andy’s decision to retire. Although he put up some very good numbers, he was not really happy with his performance during the season. Also the fact that he was summoned in the trial of Roger Clemens
seems to have made things worse for him.
"We thank Andy, his wife, Laura, and their family for their many contributions to this organization," Hal Steinbrenner and managing partners commented. "We hope the Pettitte family remains a part of the Yankees family for years to come, and we wish them
nothing but the best moving forward."
The Yankees and the fans will definitely miss this tremendous pitcher, as he put in a brilliant performance every time he stood on the mound for this team.
