Potential Test record in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ricardo-Gouveia-c84824 Ponting’s grasp at Hobart – Cricket News Update
The looming opportunity to become Australia’s most-capped Test cricketer presents itself to former captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-Rodger-Waugh-c91216.
Waugh currently holds the record for most Tests played for Australia – 168 – while Ponting’s career currently spans 165 Tests. However, Australia’s newly announced international summer schedule affords Ponting plenty of opportunities to grab the top spot
for himself.
Following the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, which is due to kick off with a
3-match Test series.
South Africa’s tour is their first since 2008-09, when they defeated the Aussies 2-1, and the Gabba, the venue for first match of the series, will be hosting its first Test against the Proteas in 49 years. Sri Lanka’s series, meanwhile, will be their first
Test campaign Down Under since 2007.
If Ponting plays all three Tests against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, the first Test against Sri Lanka (at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart), affords the Tasmanian the chance to claim Waugh’s record for himself in front of his home state fans.
The 37-year-old is currently at number 2 on the list of most Test runs scored in a career (13346). Although he was unceremoniously axed from the national ODI squad in the middle of the Commonwealth Bank series earlier this year in February, owing to poor
form, Ponting continues as a part of the line-up for the extended-overs format.
Owing to his restriction to one format, however, the right-hander’s schedule for the upcoming summer is likely to be less hectic than it may be for most.
The Tests against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 are scheduled to take place directly after, from February 1 to 13. Ponting’s
next chance to play for the national team will be the 2013 Ashes, in July next year.
