Potesta to run only once ahead of Breeders' Cup
Potesta’s connections are unlikely to make any compromise on their filly’s preparations for the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, scheduled to take place at Santa Anita in November this year. So, they have decided to run the dashing filly just one more time
before the mega event, which has been termed as Potesta’s long-term goal.
The 3-year-old has earned $132,400 so far in her short career. She started off her campaign with a magnificent performance at Santa Anita, where she narrowly missed the gold medal in the Maiden Special Weight.
After an excellent start, the Mike Mitchell-trained perpetuated her amazing work to seal a couple of fantastic victories at Betfair Hollywood Park. She banged her opposition in the Maiden Special Weight and continued her ruthless march to win Grade 2 Hollywood
Oaks last weekend.
She was a potent force right from the beginning. Despite getting bumped with Eden’s Moon, the Anthony Fanticola & Joseph Scardino-owned did well to grab the top position by a nose.
Bob Baffert’s favourite runner came up with a serious challenge in the final stages of the race, but Potesta was in great position to grab the glory. In the hands of J. Talamo, the filly did a marvellous job to retain her advantage till the end, giving the
rivals no chance to create any mess.
Mitchell wants to keep her charge on synthetic or dirt and therefore, the Torrey Pines Stakes is being considered as the best option for the 3-year-old ahead of her participation in the Breeders’ Cup. The $100,000 event will be run over a mile on the Polytrack
synthetic surface in September 2012.
“I want to keep her on synthetic or dirt. I just don’t want to ship her. We’ve got the Breeders’ Cup in our own backyard. We’re really limited and I want to stay off the grass. We can space her races,” the handler said.
Potesta’s fans wants to see the star filly in action very often, but the connections are unlikely to take any risk. The trainer also looks determined to avoid any mishap ahead of the Santa Anita challenge. Winning the Breeders’ Cup will certainly be a massive
achievement for the novice.
