Question:

Pothos cuttings -- not sure how or when

I've tried to cut off a piece of pothos and put it in water, but it died. I'd like some thorough advice on how and when to cut pothos. Also, there's a new sprout on a cutting I received. Can I cut that off, or should I leave it? Should I plant the cutting with the new sprout coming off?

  1. it's good to put it in pete sod pre fertilized with miracle grow. if you cook pork chops or chicken, in the package there will be a little blood

use the blood to pour in the dirt this will give any plant extra energy to

grow bigger & stronger. mix with hot water (not to be confused with scalding hot water).

  2. Pothos or devils ivy is a really easy plant to get cuttings from, You can take a cutting at any time through out the year. Take a cutting with two or three leaves and put it in the water in a bright spot in the house or outside in the shade. Since you tried this before I wouldn't use tap water use rain water or distilled. After a few weeks you can plant them in soil. Here is more information. It explains how to use soil but you can still use water for this plant.

I would let the root get at least 1 inch long before transplanting to pot.

  3. Pothos is one of the easiest plants to re-root.  Just cut off any growing end at an angle with a pair of sharp, clean scissors and place the sprig in non-chlorinated (distilled) water. Be sure the sprig has a couple nodes on it, i.e., elongated bumps from which the roots will emerge.  It may take a week or more for any noticable growth to appear. You need not cut off the new sprout from the cutting that you received; just make a fresh cut on the end if the existing one became dry before putting the cutting in water.  Once the cutting has a good-size clump of roots, plant in potting soil. Cuttings from a pothos can be done at anytime. Beware that pothos is prone to mealybugs so check for these pesky bugs on the underside of the leaves periodically. They are flat, round and a light brown in color.
