Question:

Potluck ideas?

I'm planning a potluck for my yearbook class and I'm wondering if I should give people specific items to bring or just give them a general idea. There are 39 of us and I don't want everyone to end up bringing chips. How should I divide up the items. I need a list of what we will need and how many of each. We aren't really going to have a main dish, but we would like to have some substantial food. Another editor along with myself will be making dessert, so we don't need that. Any ideas? We are all high schoolers, so it need to be somewhat simple for the culinary challenged. Haha. Thanks!

  1. Make sure to stress that chips and salsa is not an option.  I would make only one person bring chips

well what you  could do is make a flyer for everyone with instructions on how this is going to run.

    EXAMPLE:

    potluck for yearbook class

To help everyone with what dish to pass we have this way of organizing the food. Your first letter of your last name is going to determin what you are bring for a dish.

    A- N will bring a cold dish

O-Z will bring a hot dish.

The desserts will be provided and so will chips.

a great cold dish could be cheese and crackers or a relish tray and great hot dish could be hot wings or  mini meat balls.

  2. Start by bringing the idea up to the class...get a general idea of what people will bring..........or hand out a list of things you want to have at the party....and tell them they can choose from the list.......try to have a variety: salads, veggie platters, cheese and cracker platters, chips and drinks, plates, napkins and plastic cutlery and cups,  sandwiches, fruit platter, bread, tortilla chips and dips

  3. Sausage Cheese Balls

    Ingredients:

1 pound bulk ground sausage (mild or hot)

    1/4 cup finely chopped celery

1/4 cup finely chopped green onion

3 cups biscuit mix  ( I use Bisquick)

1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

    1 egg, lightly beaten

    1 tablespoon melted butter

    Preparation:

In a skillet, brown the sausage with celery and onion; drain well. Combine sausage mixture with baking mix, egg, cheese, and butter. Mix well; form into balls about 1 inch in size. Bake in a preheated 350° oven on lightly greased or sprayed baking sheets for 20 to 25 minutes, until lightly browned. Makes about 36 1-inch appetizers.

    Green Bean Casserole

    Ingredients:

1 can (10 3/4 oz.) Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup

    1/2 cup milk

    1 tsp. soy sauce

    Dash ground black pepper

4 cups cooked cut green beans

    1 1/3 cups French's® French Fried Onions

    Directions:

MIX soup, milk, soy, black pepper, beans and 2/3 cup onions in 1 1/2-qt. casserole.

BAKE at 350°F. for 25 min. or until hot.

STIR . Sprinkle with remaining onions. Bake 5 min.

hope your party is lotsa fun :)

  4. figure out what types of dishes you would like- like meat dish, side dishes, desserts, drinks, cups/plates....make a list of how many you'd like of each then make up a card one for each..then have the students pick a card and that's what they need to bring! you can ask the people before if they know something they'd like to make then give them the corresponding card.

or a fun thing you could do to add to the picking of the cards- corresponding to the assigned dish on their cards, have them make a dish starting with the first letter in their first or last names!
