Question:

Potted Crape Myrtle Tree?

I have been seeing these beautiful trees around town in all shapes and sizes and I had to have one. I bought my crape myrtle and it's about 12" high, very small probably just a baby. I don't have much room to plant it in my yard so I planted it in a huge pot the pot is about 24" round and about 24" or more tall. With regular pruning but not over pruning of course can I keep it in the pot? Or do I need to find a place for it in my small yard?

  1. I have 2 in very large pots. They have been there for about 5 years and doing great. I prune to shape in the winter while they are dormant and use systemic rose food on them during the growing season. My pots are not much bigger than yours

  2. If you live in a colder climate move the plant ( pot and all ) into your garage or basement over the winter.  If either of those are especially chilly you can wrap the pot in bubble wrap to help insulate it.

  3. you can keep it in a pot, but make  sure the pot is next to the house so it gets some extra heat because plants are more suseptable to cold when in pots.

it should be okay if pruned. well. if yoy live in an area with warm or mild winter it will have no problems at all in a pot

  4. Crape Myrtles are fairly low maintenance plants depending on whether you want it to grow as a shrub or a tree form.  Pruning is not necessary if you don't mind how messy it looks in winter, but it can be pruned to control height.  Be aware it will dry out faster in a pot than in the ground.

  5. do you still have the tag that came with it?... you need that to find out how big it 'wants' to be .... there are miniatures (that do really well in pots), dwarfs, to six ft, standards, to 12 ft, and trees , to 25 ft.... which one you have will decide whether it can stay in a pot longer than two seasons..... and whether it will 'fit' in your small yard....if you got no tag, then the color will help you look for it on a search like on Google Image, maybe...

  6. do not prune crape myrtle trees.  keep it in the pot until it outgrows it=2-3 years, then plant it
