Question:

Potty Training Help!!

My son is 2 years old and we are trying to potty train him but I do not think he is grasping the concept. He talks a little so it makes it difficult but he does inform me when his pamper needs changing. What techniques can I use? About how long does it take? Or is he still to small?

  1. If a child is really ready for training, it ususally goes pretty quickly -- he should be making clear progress within a few days, and probably fully trained  (just the occassional accident) within a couple of weeks.

If he doesn't understand what's expected of him, he's probably not ready, no matter how old he is.

If you haven't tried yet, and really think he may be ready,  try naked training -- strip him down completely (at least from the waist down) and let him run around bare. (If you have a yard, do it outside...) When he pees, suggest that he try the potty next time.  Often seeing what's happening allows him to make the connection between the feelings of needing to pee, peeing, and going to the potty.

If, after a few days, he makes no progress, again, put him back in diapers and wait until he IS ready, which may be in a week, or in 18 months.

  2. He might not be ready if he does not grasp the concept.  My daughter was really verbal, but she resisted and triend to reason about how much she liked the pull ups for a few months.  Finally we found her buttons to push.  She loves cartoons.  She was allowed to watch them if she tried to go on the potty.

  3. he could still be too small. My son is only 21 months and informs me when his diaper is yucky, but he isn't ready for the potty. My daughter didn't grasp the potty concept until she was 3. my oldest was on the potty at 1 1/2 because she would always scramble to get up there and do what mommy was doing. The thing I used to get my daughter to go potty was to get a chart and write everyone's names on it and when you go potty in the potty, you get a star (use the bright foil stars, kids love them) and soon when my daughter saw everyone else had stars, I would tell her you have to go in the potty, and when you do, you can have a star too. and that worked. some people use m&ms or skittles and when the kid goes, they get a candy...didn't work for me because my daughter wanted to eat the whole jar of m&ms. Age 2 is kind of sketchy for potty training because you can't exactly tell if they're ready, all you can do is keep trying. if he will sit on the potty, you can also read him a book while he's on it and when he goes, give him a reward of some kind to help him grasp the concept. I'm gonna use matchbox cars when my son starts since those are his absolute favorite. my oldest however, loved bandaids and I used those for a reward.

  4. there are certain things to show that your child is ready to be potty trained:he should no when he or she needs to go to the toilet

let you no they have a dirty nappy

be able to hold it for a few seconds while you get them to the toilet/potty

    understand and follow simple directions

the best age to potty train is between 2 and just ofeter their 3rd birthday

however boys are normally ready towards the end of this range and take a little longer than girls!

  5. boys are so much harden then girls.  i bought my son his own potty chair when he was around 2, he explored it for a while and then wanted nothing to do with it.  i would ask him every day and he would refuse to try.  i put the potty away for about 2 months and took it out again, he was aroiund 32 months and then he decided himself he wanted to do it and was potty trained within 1 week (well we still have some p**p issues occasionally) I think when you push it on them too much they start to reject it, let him  do it on his own time.  when yoiu do get him to use it for the first time give him a reward (sticker or something small) that will enourage him to use it more and more.  We had a sticker page, every time he went he got one,  once he filled the page with around 10-20 stickers he would get a prize (matchbox car, small train, whatever he is into)  good luck!

edit- i just read some of the other answers and the naked training does work (just expect it to be messy a few times first!!) but i wouldnt try it until he gets the concept of using the potty a few times first.  and also get him some big boy undies with his favorite character on them, that may get him excited to use the potty more
