Question:

Potty Training Question?

My two year old little girl is FINALLY taking interest in the potty, and actually peed in it yesterday. My question is, should I go buy her some panties, and let her wear them (except to bed) and teach her that way? Also, what is the appropriate response when she pees/poos in the panties?

  1. I like to set children up for success.  If you want for her to get the mechanics of going to the bathroom down, then use pull-ups.  At this age, some children have a tough time with loss, even the loss of their #2!  And the process of potty training is tricky enough without risking the possibility that accidents could ruin what interest she *is* showing in going "like a big girl."

Two resources I like for this are "Touchpoints" by T. Berry Brazelton and a moms blog I like (where they're actually talking about potty training *today*) called Midwest Moms.

Good luck!  I am potty training my own child right now, and I'm using positive rewards (stickers) to help track progress.  I try not to have a strong reaction to accidents -- I save that for the positive moments.   My little one is 2 1/2... so, we'll see how it goes.  :)

  2. i am currently pottie training my 2 yearold rylee and we use pull ups and when she starts going to the pottie very often then we are gonna swich to a thing called first timmers wich is basically a thick underwear that it looks just the real thing but its thick and willl hold pee u can find them at walmart i used them on all my kids

  3. There are several methods... This is one...

I would take her to the store and let her pick out some cool panties and yes put them on her during the day... Pull ups at night....

If she pee/poops in them - take them off her and tell her that you have to throw these cool undies away because there is pee or p**p on them - the pee/p**p has to go in the potty.......

  4. Yes absolutely that way you are getting to know her routine and she will find out that you go in the toilet not in panties. That's great. my daughter is 2 and fully potty trained since she was like 1 1/2. When you see her go in her panties what you do is take her to the toilet and tell her no diaper in toilet and point at it. When she goes by her self let her flush the toilet and say bye bye so the noise wont scare her. you sit on it and say see Mommy goes in toilet too. The more you engage in it the more she Will do it good luck ;)

  5. I found it best to start by having her run around bare.  No diapers, no panties, no nothing.  Once she was making it to the potty most of the time, I put her in cloth training pants for a couple of weeks, then took her to the store to pick out underwear.

(If she has an accident, commiserate, and suggest that maybe next time she'll make it to the potty in time.)

  6. Pants on her during the day. If she has a little accident in them she will understand how uncomfortable that is and it will make her want to use the potty. Whatever you do, don't reprimand her for having an accident, she will learn in her own time and it could set the whole process back months. Good luck.
