Question:

Potty Traning, When?

Okay my daughter is 22 months old. She always tells me when she is wet, but not when she poops. I bought a potty seat that goes on the toilet. But she is scared of it. So I was wondering what other moms or dads thought about getting a small potty for her? Have any of you been successful with those training pottys? What other tips does anyone have for me. Oh and what is the actual age of starting to potty train. I wasn't looking to get her totally off the diaper. She is still really young. But I did want her to sit on her littl potty every time I went to the bathroom that way she could get the hang of it.

Thanks for any advice.

  1. Most children start to potty train at about the age of 24 months.  If your daughter is afraid to sit on the toilet try the potty chair.  Something very simple is usually the best way to go.

Some children are insecure when sitting on the toilet so one thing you can do to give a sense of security is to place a step stool under your daughter's feet to help her feel stable.

One thing I had a friend try was to have her child use a toy to potty train.  Her child loved being the one in charge of the potty training.  It helped to teach him how to be responsible for getting himself to the potty.

By using the toy the child was able to become the trainer and learned how to pull his clothes on and off.  The child was potty trained in about two days.

You may want to start by using a toy with her as you progress through this stage.  Before you begin to potty train, get yourself into the right mindset and have a positive attitude about potty training.  When you start something with a positive attitude things usually go smoother.

  2. I don't like using the baby potties, because it not only makes for a tough transition later, it's pretty gross to have to clean up.  I'll take a diaper any day:)

However, if she is frightened of the big potty then it might be a good idea.  Just make sure that if she decides she doesn't want to do it anymore that you back off and give her a bit of time to get interested again.  Girls are usually easier to break then girls...I'll trade you:)

  3. I did have a little potty chair for my daughter to sit on every time I went potty but it didn't last long before she was using it for her dolls and to play with. I would just tell her every time she tells you that she is wet that she needs to go potty in the big potty like a big girl. You can set up a little chart on the wall and give her a stick every time she goes. Since she is so young you don't have to push her just encourage it.

  4. If you do not want your child out completely out of diapers then do not bother with potty training. The both of you have to be fully ready for the transition.

The small pottys are great. I have used them with all three of my kids.

22 months is not too young for a girl to potty train. If she is showing interest then you should reconsider just allowing her the freedom to go and use the potty.

  5. My 2 year old is clean. I bought a small potty (Baby Bjorn) nothing fancy. I figured the moment she couls tell me she was peeing it was time to put her on. I started once a day at the same time and progressed. Usually about 20 minutes after a meal or drink. I would reward her with stickers everytime she would pee or p**p on the potty and of course we sang our potty song (made it up).
