Question:

Potty training: Does your toddler need to be out of the crib before you start?

I want to potty train my son, but he's still in a crib right now, and getting him a bigger bed is a little while off. We CAN take a side off his crib - but I'm wondering if we should spend a week getting him used to his bed if we do that, before starting potty training. Does he need to be in a toddler bed? Don't they wear diapers at night for a little while, while you're training? Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!! :o)

  1. I think that the crib will be fine. When a toddler first starts potty training he or she will not go on their own. The parent generally takes the child to the potty every 1-2 hours.

  2. Yes it is alot easier because when it has to go it can just get out the bed and go.

  3. The average age for boys to potty train is 3 1/2 but every child is different (girls average 2 1/2).  For my sons, standing to pee helped them connect what they saw with what they felt internally.  I researched and found a very sturdy stool with sides for the toilet so they could hold on standing or sitting.  http://www.amazon.com/Elite-Child-Corpor...

This stool made all the difference for them and was well worth it.  Hope this helps.

  4. He will still need diapers or pull ups at night.  His bladder isn't big enough to hold urine for that long.  He also sleeps too heavily to get up and go to the bathroom by himself.  By the time he is 3 or 4 he will probably be too afraid of the dark (even if you leave nightlights everywhere) to get out of bed at night and go to the bathroom by himself.

  5. It depends a lot whether he signals when he is filling his Luvs.

There are facial expression some times, and if you get to know them and read them, you can put him on the Potty, before, and he will soon learn to connect the two. Do praise and make it a pleasant experience, and  he will want to do it again, and become "Big Boy". and to tell his Dad what a good boy he is  Night time diapers and doubled up  until he is ready to wake up by himself and able to go potty, on his own, may take a little more time. You should fly the flag  on the day you have no more diapers to change ....
