Potty training a 3 yr old doxy?

We took in a 3yr old mini dox that was our grandma's when she passed. She won't tell us when she needs to go outside, and she keeps poopin in our daughters room. She is a very private dog, when she goes outside she will wait till everyone goes inside to go potty.

How can I get her to stop going in the house?

  1. take her outside every couple of hours. Get her on a eating schedule so that she will be on a bathroom schedule. No water past 7:00pm and do not leave a bowl full of food out for her. Only feed her 1-2 times a day.

  2. Feed her outside in the shade so when shes done eating she can go.

Also when she has and accident in the house show it to her and take her ouside.Give her a nice treat or good girl when she goes out side

  3. Why didn't you encourage grandma (may she r.i.p.) to potty train it when it was three months old. You got your work cut out for you now. If it's going in one certain spot in the house, you have got to CLEAN that area 110%. YOU have to let the dog know YOU are in charge because apparently she thinks she is. If it is possible take her out every 30 to 40 minutes and take her for a one hour walk in the morning and evening to get her used to going outside. In such an extreme case like this, when you must leave her in the house alone try a pet cage. If you think this is too extreme then you HAVE to confine her to her OWN space. It has to be a small space too. NOT a large open space, because she will just pick another spot to due her thing. Dogs do not normally go in their own space, and after awhile she will be used to that fact and start letting you know when it's time to go out. Praise her every single time, let her know that she was a good girl. This is VERY important in potty training. How is her feeding schedule? Is she even on a schedule? This is important training tip #2. Feed her when you eat. What's the outcome when you eat? That's right, you, more times than not, have to use the R/R. This rule applies to your pets too. I could go on and on but I think I will stop right here. Good luck, and remember YOU rule the house not them!

One thing I overlooked is the fact you said you got her from your grandma after she passed. She maybe haveing withdrawls and she misses her previous parent. Try retrieving an article of old clothing with your grandmas scent on it, for her to sleep with and all the while keep using your training methods.
