Question:

Potty training a hamster?

I bought a hamster potty and some litter yesterday, and I put it in the cage last night and scooped some p**p in there to give her the idea. This morning I can tell she had messed around in there, there's a bit of bedding in there, but I'm not sure if she used it for it's intended purpose. I suppose it might take a few days (weeks?) for her to get the hang of it? Does anyone have any success stories about this stuff?

  1. potty training a hamster ,i have never heard anything so daft

  2. It's a good bet the litter will be thought of as nesting material...it could even be toxic to your hamster...I would remove it now.

  3. Put it in the corner they use the most. For about a week put all the soiled bedding you find in the box... Then they will get the idea.

  4. use a little of the wet bedding too, thats really what gets them to go there. if she doesn't get it right away, put a little more in there. my hamster started using it in a couple days. the only problem i had was that he dug the litter out of the thing for some reason. oh well. it still worked out fine!

  5. she'll go where she wants and in a place that wont bother her, she bury it too. a potty wont work to well but u can try

  6. You hamster will automatically go pee and poo in certain designated areas of her cage.  You cannot officially potty train them or litterbox train them, they will usually p**p in their bedding chamber because they actually eat their own p**p sometimes.  Then the pee will probably go in another area.  At least ours does this.  However sometimes anything goes and she pees in her bed area as well.  I don't know why, maybe she doesn't care about sleeping near her pee.  I do keep it very clean though.  I clean out her pee and poo areas about every 3 days and the entire cage gets cleaned about once every week.

  7. give her a hamster treat every time she uses it properly. there are lots of different kinds of treats at the pet store.

  8. its impossible

  9. Well, potty training isn't the easiest thing to do seeing as though you're supposed to spread bedding everywhere for your hamster's whol cage is her toilet!

    I'm sorry, but unless your hamster has the brains of at least a cat, it can't exactly be potty trained.

  10. Things You’ll Need:

        * Small plastic box or hamster litter box

        * Litter for hamsters

        * Tweezers

    Step1

    Purchase a litter box designed for hamsters or use a small plastic box that the hamster can jump into. Specially designed litter boxes for hamsters have one corner higher than the others to prevent hamster urine from spraying outside of the cage. Most boxes are designed to be attached to the corner of a cage. A few boxes have covers and entrances.

    Step2

    Watch your hamster at night and observe which corner of the cage it normally uses for droppings. Place the litter box in that corner. Make sure this corner is away from an area that the hamster sleeps in.

    Step3

    Fill the litter box one-third full with a specially made litter for hamsters. This litter can be found at pet stores.

    Step4

    Pick up hamster droppings using tweezers, and place them in the litter box. Place a small amount of urine-soaked bedding in the litter box.

    Step5

    Keep adding fresh droppings and urine-soaked bedding until the hamster begins to use the box. This process usually takes about a week or two.

    Step6

    Keep the box clean and filled with fresh litter once a week once the hamster is trained on its use.

    ((I have not done this myself but they say you can))

    I posted the page I listed with instructions and also my google results.
