My son is 31 months. He has been wearing underwear and has been dry for 2 days. He woke up one day and said he wanted his big boy underwear, so we obliged. The problem is pooping. Each day he has had an accident only when he poops. How do we help him get over this hurdle? He's doing fine with peeing. Thanks for your help.

  1. I would try and observe him one day. Does he make a face when he is pooping? Does he stop what he is doing and just stand still while he is pooping? If he does, you can watch for that sign and encourage him to run to the potty. My son is only a few months older and pretty much trained for p**p, and we have been working hard on the peeing part. I had to take away his diapers completely to get it done. I have them hidden and put one on him AFTER he falls asleep at night. If I need one for a long car trip I find one when he is not in the room:)

  2. If he's having accidents every day, are they around the same time that you can anticipate when he should need to go? My pediatrician always said to put them on the potty about half an hour after they eat a meal. Try to figure out his time-frame, and use rewards. We used little Matchbox or Hot Wheels cars and trucks as rewards for pooping on the potty. You can get a 5 pack for about $5 ( cheaper than Pull-Ups!). He also liked stickers as rewards. Keep trying and encouraging, never scold. He'll get there!! :)

  3. Keep praising him first of all.  It takes time but be persistant and continue to ask him if he has to go.  Make a note of the time frame when he soils himself and try to schedule it around that same time frame and the next thing you will know  Hes coming up to you and saying I got to go pottty mommy, or come running to show you what he has done

  4. I would ask him every hour, if he has to go p**p.  Then that way it is a reminder to him.  If you have underwear with characters on it, for example Diego...say, "You don't want to p**p on Diego?"  That worked for my son.  I wouldn't scold him (and it sounds like you don't), just tell him that his p**p belongs in the potty.
