Question:

Potty training - won't sit down?

We are attempting to potty train, and everything is going pretty well (he is excited about sitting on the potty, he has peed in the potty several times), but when he has to p**p he refuses to sit down. We could be sitting for an hour, with nothing happening, then he'll stand up (and won't sit back down). Within seconds of putting his diaper on, he'll p**p. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you get past it?

  1. Yup, this is very common. Just be patient and give him time. I do thinking sitting on the potty for an hour is way to long though. Definitely take it down to 15 minutes. We made our son sit on his potty for 15 min. every two hours when we were potty training. (Some parents make them try every hour but I personally dont have the time for that! lol) Eventually he'll p**p in there and when he does just act like it's the GREATEST freakin' thing you've ever seen. Give him a sticker, make up a dance, tell relatives. This will really boost his esteem and he'll be potty trained in no time.

My son had a hard time just getting started period, so whenever my husband (or my dad who we were staying with over the summer) had to go and pee then they would take him to the bathroom with them. When he saw them doing it then naturally he just had to do it himself so he could be "one of the guys." lol  Maybe it could work for going #2 as well.

Also tell your tot while he's sitting on the potty to push. You'll feel like a nutcase but show him how to make "pooping" faces. Tell him to have his belly push the poopy out.

A lot of kids just dont understand HOW to use a toilet because the diaper is just second nature to them.

    Good luck!

It's easier than it seems. Trust me, I've been there =] (and will be there again! lol)

  2. Comfort is the key.  My sons were afraid of what was under them so I researched and found a very safe and very sturdy stool with sides for the toilet so they could hold on standing or sitting and never have to touch the toilet.  http://www.amazon.com/Elite-Child-Corpor...

I put toilet paper over the water to stop splashes.  They felt in control and lost their fear of pooping and they were proud of using a real toilet.  This stool made all the difference for them and they were quickly potty trained.    Well worth it and really made the difference for them.  Hope this helps.
