Poulan riding mower?

my uncle mike just gave me his two year old poulan riding mower, works perfect but with a few flaws that hes been battling with over the two years, one, the gas tank on it is some kind of plastic which does not hold up too well and always gives and cracks in the corners, has anybody else had that problem and whats the best way to fix it? me and my dad bought some jb weld water seal stick that is an apoxy for plastic and gas tanks, it still leaks because we must have not got a good seal on it but whats the best thing to use? available at any hardware store? another problem is that the blade shifter that turns on the blade and turns off the blade almost every time gets stuck when you want to turn it off, i think its getting hung on something but if you wiggle it a lot it will eventually give, ill have to look at that myself but basically im looking for a fix to that gas can without getting a new one because he kept getting new ones and they would always crack
