Poulter urges the team to unite
Ian Poulter is feeling bad for the players who have been knocked out of the final team of the Ryder cup but at the same time, he asks the media to move forward and focus on the players that have made the cut.
Justine Rose and Paul Casey got eliminated from the final team last Sunday and the reason was their own decision of not appearing in the Johnnie walker championship at Gleneagles. The irony here is that both were in the FedEx four. As for Poulter, he was given wild card in 2008 in nearly similar conditions but the player still performed out class and remained top scorer with four points out of five.
This signifies one thing that despite performing mediocre throughout the season, a player can perform well at the field if he prepares himself for it. Ian Poulter is on the Ryder cup team for Europe after he finished in the 15th place in the Fed ex cut playoff. While talking to the media, Poulter said he fully understands what other team members must be feeling as they have lost very good players but the issue is that it’s time to move on and prepare the team for the big day due in October.
True! Both the players were outstanding and that was the reason for them being in the top of the FedEx list. Rose had two recent tournament victories while Casey finished third in the Open and overall he was the top 10th player of the world. When Colin Montgomerie was asked whether he was satisfied with his decision, he replied that he was contended but if he could have chosen twenty players, both the guys would have been on the team. However, again it was not Colin’s decision that was right or wrong but their own decision to stay back in US and wait for the results at a time when situation was changing rapidly with constant changes coming in the FedEx points.
Analysts say that five players have made cut into the final team and that is based on merit. It was the captain’s decisions so everyone is expected to respect it. The players should start preparing themselves for the big event at the Celtic Manor and show unity so that nothing could tear them apart at the final moments. Meanwhile, Poulter had defeated Casey in the final round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play that took place in Arizona this February. At that time, no one knew the ultimate results of a small victory but in long terms the results became hard for Casey who got disqualified from the final team. If Casey had won at that moment, Poulter would have been out and so would have Peter Hanson.
Moreover, Rose is also hurt as this is the second time in the season when he has missed a cut for the major championship. Although, he had three out of four records and a partner with whom he had coupled in the past. But still it didn’t work for him as he was relying on the wild card. To wrap it up, Ian Poulter, who has made the cut in the final team called a press conference to urge unity in the team and convey the players his mind frame.
