Poverty line...?

What is the poverty line? I found a definition from wikipedia, but i'm struggling to explain it in my own words!

Any help given is appreciated, thanks in advance!

I think "the line" is being above or being below an income that you can sustain your living expenses without help.

Poverty line means semi-alive.

Poverty line is a level at which some government agency decided below it you're in poverty and above it you're not.   A pretty poor idea since how a person lives has such a large effect on whether their poor or not.   My family was below the poverty line all the while I was growing up.    We took nothing from the government, yet were able to do more than any of my friends, just in a different way.   A month every winter in the Bahamas?    Camp out instead of living in a hotel.    Eat over a campfire instead of a 4 star restaurant.
